What’s up with the different ALMONDS? Q/A & Info.

Yes, Organic Matters carries a lot of Organic Almond Products, and we understand that it can be confusing for most anyone who’s not part of the almond business.

What are the main difference between your 2 types of almonds? Which one should I choose?

Today, we will break down the information of our almond selection, and help you choose the most suitable one for your needs.

The Almond – The Basics:

The almond is both a species of tree native to the Middle East and SouthEast Asia as well as the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. The fruit of the almond is called a drupe, consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the edible soft almond seed inside.

What are the differences between your Almonds?

Om typically carries almonds from California and Italy (occasionally stocking Spanish, when Italian almonds are not available)

#1.  California Almonds – Non-Pareil Variety

Our California grown almonds are called Non-Pareil (“unlike any other” in French) – a large, sweet tasting variety which loves a long growing season. Non-Pareil almonds are uniform in taste and size.

Quality: Very high, always sweet in flavor, very consistent in shape and size.

Price: ranges from $13.50/lb – $11.00/lb (as per Novemeber 2017 prices*)

Specs: As per California Law, all California almonds have to be flash steam-sterilized, resulting in a product that cannot be advertised as fully raw. (although we have had someone sprout one before…)

Summary: These high-grade almonds are excellent for snacking straight from the bag, used as a garnish, added to Trail Mix, and well suited for any culinary applications. Due to a slightly higher price point, these almonds may not be best suited for higher scale food manufacturing or production.

#2.  Italian Almonds – Genco Variety

Our Italian almonds are imported directly from Italy and are of the Genco Variety – a high yield almond variety with a consistent mild taste.

Quality: Medium to high, very few (<1%) bitter almonds, inconsistent in shape and size.

Price: ranges from $10.00/lb – $8.50/lb (as per Novemeber 2017 prices*)

Specs: Italian Almonds are unpasteurized – meaning that they are fully raw.

Summary: Our Organic Italian Genco Variety Almonds are great for use in cooking, baking, and making almond milk. Although not as sweet in flavor compared to the California Non-Pareil Almonds, Genco Almonds still make for a great out of the bag snack. Due to their great price point, they make an ideal addition to any home kitchen or food manufacturing facility.
